EMERGENCE OF THE MANBOY

This is essentially a story of adolescence.
As I have mentioned, there are four stages of life which begin with Experimental and end with Eldership.
This adolescent stage is right at the heart of this experimental stage.
For boys this can be an awkward stage…
Physically the Manboy’s growing adult teeth don’t fit the jaw, the limbs get big and maybe even gangly, the voice squeaks and grunts uncontrollably and the Manboy doesn’t know when the right moment is to shave the caterpillar that has emerged on the top lip.
So if this is just the physical changes, whats happening meta-physically??
For the mind there’s a broadening and deepening of feelings and emotions and some of them can’t be explained… which can be a source of frustration or confusion.
For the rational intellect so many questions come up… why this? why that?
Then these questions naturally lead onto enquiry about identity as the ego and self awareness expands… who really am I? Who was I? Who will I be?
Organically questions of identity springs inquisition about purpose… what’s my role, my life’s goal? Am I born to just die, maybe get a little old?
Wow… no wonder there’s a sense of turmoil at times.
And no wonder there is wonder!
all this leads to an age of experimentation…
…and this emergence of the manboy
This is why its vitally important for boys to have mentorship… guides, coaches… whatever term causes you the least concern.
Parents are definitely good… but, as my blog “A Child Needs Two Parents?” suggests, there needs to be an elder that speaks to them like a peer… for the Manboy’s emotional intellect and language setting is on kinsman ship, camaraderie and friendship.
Frustration occurs for the manboy when this experimental and inquisitive stage doesn’t have some level of direction and lead onto the next natural stage of Experience.
The Manboy needs to feel like he is free to ask the questions he needs answers to
The Manboy needs to experiment to see what skills he has in him
The Manboy needs guidance of his experiments using the polarity of virtue and vice.
The Manboy needs guidance using applied wisdom delivered through equality, not arbitrary authority.
The Manboy needs to understand that his experiments mature into experience which will bring leadership.
The Manboy has wonder
The Manboy needs wonder
The Manboy, despite the awkwardness of the transition… is wonderful.

The boy doesn’t ask to be a man
Time moves along without a care for his plans
Giving him mans claws, jaws and teeth
Confusion and emotional frustrations beneath
the skin, which becomes coarse
and with a voice thats forever horse
asks why.
who, what, where, how and when
will I begin
to find and realise my purpose
